Director


Malkia A. Cyril is a writer, veteran activist and strategist, and the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Media Justice in Oakland, CA and coordinator of the Media Action Grassroots Network.  Launched in 2002- CMJ is a national media strategy and action center dedicated building a powerful movement for racial and economic justice, and fiscal sponsor for MAG-Net.  Before founding the Center for Media Justice, Malkia worked at national racial justice communications group We Interrupt This Message as Project Director and Interim ED.  After more than 10 years of regional grassroots advocacy, anti-war activism, and strategic media work with organizations such as the Applied Research Center, the Community Organizing Team, and Youth Together- Malkia’s leadership is still shaped by her upbringing in Brooklyn as the queer daughter of a Black Panther mom.  To date, Malkia has published numerous articles on movement-building, political organizing, strategic communications, and media policy change, and creative works in anthologies such as Aloud, Afrekete, and In the Tradition. As an artist, organizer, and communications strategist- Malkia hopes h/er leadership and commitment to struggle speaks beautifully and  humbly for itself.
